                           Brief History of Enochian Keys

In 1584 during a spiritualistic séance held by the court mathematician and astrologer of Queen Elizabeth I doctor John Dee and medium Edward Kelly, a spirit named Nalvage has dictated them 19 magic Keys. The spiritists and the spirit communicated by a crystal.

The 10th of April brought the first four Keys dictated by Nalvage back to front in order not to disturb the forces being awakened by him and translations of these Keys. Later, Keys 5 – 18 were received, each of them in consecutive order and without translation. On the 13th of July the spiritists got Key 19 (the call of the aethyrs), the translation of the previous Keys and the aethyrs’ names.

The language of the Keys bears no resemblance to known Earth languages. Nalvage has also pointed out that this language was a means of communication between spirits, which was known in ancient times but lost in due course. Dee and Kelly refer to this language as “angelical”.

By lucky coincidence, Dee’s manuscipts haven’t been lost during the ages and are stored in the British Museum.

In the 19th century the Keys were studied thoroughly by the Golden Dawn order owing to which they received their name – Enochian Keys, according to the biblical patriarch Enoch (Hanoch, Hebrew), known as a man who “walked with God; and he was not; for God took him” (Gen. 5:24).

Rose Kelly (1874-1932)

Thus, Enoch side by side with Melchisedek and Elijah is one of the three men who haven’t experienced physical death and was ascended in his lifetime.

It was in the Golden Dawn where an outstanding magician, poet and philosopher Aleister Crowley first encountered the Keys. Later he brought them in correspondence with Qabalah.

On the 8th-10th of April, 1905 (precisely 320(!) years after Dee), a spirit named Aiwaz conveyed to Crowley “Book of the Law”, a tractate of a new heon, via a medium (and Crowley’s wife) Rose Kelly(!).

In November – December, 1909, while crossing on foot the Sahara desert Crowley with the help of Victor Neuburg has performed a series of rituals, which resulted in “Voice and Vision ” book, a description of the 30 aethyrs’ visualization.
